Moongre Aloo Sabzi – Radish Pods and Potato Curry

Radish Pods with Potatoes / Moongray Aloo Sabzi

Moongre Aloo Sabzi is a simple and delicious vegetarian recipe. It’s the perfect recipe to try when you’re in the mood to experiment in the kitchen but don’t want to fuss with a bunch of new and intimidating ingredients.

The recipe i’m sharing today is my mother’s recipe for Moongre Aloo Sabzi. She guided me in exactly how her mother used to cook Moongre.

I had never even heard of Moongre when my mom brought them home from the Indian Grocery store. She smiled and said, “We used to eat these all the time in Pakistan! I didn’t know they started selling them here.”  I could tell she was excited. She wondered if these would taste the same as her mom’s recipe.  I decided to cook them with her since I was already working on my kitchen skills while learning to cook more traditional Pakistani recipes.

Moongre, also called Radish Pods, are commonly grown in the Punjab Province of Pakistan and India. I have to admit that they taste quite different than I was expecting. Even though they resemble beans, they have their own unique flavor unlike any other vegetable i’ve had. Moongre have a very sharp taste, similar to radishes. Duh! They are technically the roots of a radish. In the end, the combination of moongre with all the spices and potatoes made for a very satisfying meal.

Ends of Radish Pods

The recipe i’m sharing today is my mother’s recipe for Moongre Aloo Sabzi. She guided me in exactly how her mother used to cook Moongre.

First you cut the Radish pods into pea size pieces and soak in water.

Then you chop the tomato and potato. Set aside.

Chop 1 onion and saute on medium heat with some ghee or oil.

When they are golden brown, add a little water to the pot to prevent them from burning.

Then add all the ground spices except garam masala to the onions. Also add the ginger and garlic paste and continue to cook on medium heat for few minutes. Cook till all the water evaporates and you see the oil separating from the spices.

Now add the Radish Pods to the onions. Also add 1 cup of water.

Turn the heat down to low, cover the pot and cook for 30 minutes till the radish pods soften.

Then add the chopped potatoes and tomatoes to the pot.

Mix well.

Make sure there is a little water at the bottom of the pot. Now cover and continue to cook on low heat for another 10 minutes until the potatoes are soft and the water from the tomatoes has evaporated.

Then add the chopped green chilly, garam masala, and chopped cilantro to the pot. Cover and cook for 5 minutes. This step in Pakistani cooking is called Daam or giving steam to the food before serving.

Serve with Roti / Naan. Enjoy!
